The Core Principle
Taste requires restraint.
When designing, strip back until it feels almost too simple - until it borders on bland. Then refine. The confidence is in what's NOT there.
Visual Language
Palette
- Monochromatic only - black ink on pure white
- No colors. No gradients. No exceptions.
- High contrast, crisp edges
Typography
- Clean sans-serif (Inter, IBM Plex, system fonts)
- Hierarchy through weight, not font changes
- Bold for primary, light for secondary
- Generous letter-spacing for refinement
Texture
- Dot matrix / halftone patterns for data aesthetic
- Dense dots = depth and sophistication
- Patterns should whisper, not shout
- Code snippets as texture, not decoration
Space
- Massive white space - this is the opulence
- If you're unsure whether to add something, don't
- Negative space IS the design
Composition
- Centered, balanced, symmetrical
- One focal point maximum
- The eye should rest, not hunt
What Success Looks Like

Writing Style
Clear, direct, technical but accessible. From our announcement copy:
"Today, we're releasing a research preview of GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, a smaller version of GPT-5.3-Codex, and our first model designed for real-time coding. Codex-Spark marks the first milestone in our partnership with Cerebras. Codex-Spark is optimized to feel near-instant when served on ultra-low latency hardware—delivering more than 1000 tokens per second while remaining highly capable for real-world coding tasks."
Key characteristics:
- No marketing fluff
- Technical precision
- Specifics over superlatives
- Let the work speak
Anti-Patterns
Avoid:
- Color accents (we don't do color)
- Decorative elements (every pixel must earn its place)
- Loud typography (whisper, don't shout)
- Proving intelligence (if you're smart, it shows)
- Speed over craft (take the time to do it right)
The Question
When stuck, ask: "What would Nicholai do?"
Not because he's the arbiter of taste, but because he takes pride in craft over speed. The answer is usually: less. Strip it back. Trust the work.
